Meet Multi-Sensoria Artist Lauren Kasmer

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 22:28:22 GMT

When it comes to the wide-ranging activities and interlocking mediums practiced by artist Lauren Kasmer, multidisciplinary doesn’t begin to cover it. Across photography, textiles, wearable art, film and video, sculpture, installation, performance, storytelling, artist books, public gatherings, and thematic, narrative shared food, Kasmer investigates permutations of history, memory, intuition, identity, place-making, and somatic knowledge. By engaging and layering all the senses in complex structures of communion with the natural world and with each other, Kasmer’s relationship to the elements is both documented and embodied. Contextualized within her luxurious universe of texture and color, human stories shared through food—both recipes told and dishes served—expands the ways in which her message of beauty, life, and resilience can be experienced.Lauren KasmerL.A. Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 22:28:22 GMT

We tend to think of U.S. News & World Report in terms of college rankings, but they analyze and rank other things too, including great vacation destinations, cruises, hotels and inexpensive travel spots. And unlike those college ones, where the near-impossibility of admission is a through line for the top contenders, these affordable travel picks are accessible to everyone. As you might guess, national parks and natural wonders figure prominently on the “best cheap vacations in the U.S.” list for 2023-2024. A quarter of the 20 destinations are national parks. California’s Sequoia & King’s Canyon National Park, for example, gets a shout-out at No. 5, thanks to its gigantic trees, stunning scenery, abundant trails and year-round access. There are park-adjacent destinations, too, that range from Tennessee’s Gatlinburg (No. 14), which lies just outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, to Maine’s Bar Harbor (No. 6), the gateway to Acadia Nati...

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 22:28:22 GMT

By Jen Christensen | CNNPeople in areas of the United States with high levels of a certain kind of air pollution have a greater risk of dementia, a new study found. The study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, looked at data from 27,857 survey participants between 1998 to 2016. About 15%, or 4,105, developed dementia during the study period, and all lived in areas of the US with higher concentrations of particle pollution than those who didn’t develop dementia, the researchers found. The study authors said it’s the first nationally representative study of the potential effects of particle pollution on dementia in the US, and the link to dementia was most robust in areas with pollution from agriculture and wildfires. It’s important to note, the study authors said, that these associations were observed even at pollution levels lower than the current national ambient air quality standards.Particle pollution, also called PM2.5 or particulate matter, is the mix of sol...

BEIRUT (AP) — Libya’s judicial authorities have formally asked Lebanon to release one of the late dictator Moammar Gadhafi’s sons, held without charges in Lebanon since 2015 because of his deteriorating health, officials said Monday. The health of Hannibal Gadhafi has been deteriorating since he went on hunger strike on June 3, to protest his detention without trial. He was taken to hospital at least twice since then and has been only drinking small amounts of water.According to two Lebanese judicial officials, Libya’s prosecutor general Al-Sediq al-Sour, sent a request earlier this month to his Lebanese counterpart, Ghassan Oueidat, regarding Hannibal Gadhafi. The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. The note stated that Lebanon’s cooperation in this matter could help reveal the truth regarding the fate of a prominent Lebanese Shiite cleric, Moussa al-Sadr, who went missing in Libya in 1978.It questi...
