SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Sergio Pérez has the quickest car in Formula One and can’t make it count in qualifying.Pérez hasn’t qualified in the top 10 for five grands prix in a row after placing 16th in qualifying for the British Grand Prix on Saturday — though he later moved up a place when Valtteri Bottas was disqualified. His teammate Max Verstappen is unbeatable in the same Red Bull car with five pole positions in succession, and Verstappen will be aiming for a sixth consecutive win in Sunday’s race.“The changing conditions made things a lot trickier, so we ended up having a poor qualifying,” Pérez said, saying an unexpectedly long red-flag stoppage left him with cold tires. “It’s going to be difficult to come through the field (in Sunday’s race) but we will try our very best.”It’s becoming a common sight to see Pérez working his way through the pack in races, generally for solid points finishes, but the standings gap to Verstappen has grown to 81 p...

Australia leads 2-0.Rain at Headingley prevented play from starting for nearly five hours, well after tea, and England used conditions ripe for seam and swing to reduce Australia from 116-4 overnight to 170-8 in 14 overs.Head was merely trying to survive while wickets fell around him. But with Australia eight down and leading by only 196 runs, and Todd Murphy walking out to bat in his fifth test, Head, on 34, decided to launch a fightback for as many runs as possible. But, first, he had to wait while Murphy hit two boundaries ...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Another month, another solid gain for America’s job market. The pace of hiring by businesses and government agencies in June — 209,000 added jobs — was the smallest monthly gain in 2 1/2 years. Yet it was still a healthy increase, enough to reduce the unemployment rate from 3.7% to 3.6%, barely above a half-century low.And it amounted to further evidence of an economy that has defied persistent forecasts of a recession. GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — The struggle to certify the results of Guatemala’s first-round presidential election suffered what experts called another setback Saturday after the chief justice of the Supreme Court issued an order blocking the certification. Chief Justice Silvia Valdés Quezada issued the unusual order late Friday. She stipulated the process could not go forward until the electoral authorities who conducted a review of precinct vote tally sheets from the June 25 election reported back to her on their methods and any inconsistencies found. Valdés Quezada said they had to do that within 12 hours. The reviews witnessed by the AP found improperly marked or counted votes amounted to less than 1% of the total, not enough to change the results. The electoral observers’ mission from the Organization of American States said in a statement Saturday that it was concerned by “the attempt to continue judicializing the electoral process.”The OAS group said the tally sheet review “was d...
