The Founding Fathers signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, by John Trumbull in 1819.Photo Illustration: The Intercept / Getty ImagesAmericans love to talk about our Founding Fathers, with many of us believing they were infallible geniuses. We can tell this isn’t true just by reading this letter from John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776:The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America.
