OTTAWA — The Bank of Canada says its business outlook survey indicator fell in the third quarter as companies expect sales growth to slow over the coming year. The bank’s business outlook survey report says the indicator was at its lowest level in over a decade, except for a brief period early in the COVID-19 pandemic. The report found the negative effects of rising interest rates are spreading with more businesses thinking higher rates will constrain sales and investment plans. The survey also suggested that inflation expectations among businesses edged down but remained higher than before the pandemic.Meanwhile, the bank’s Canadian survey of consumer expectations suggested consumers’ expectations of inflation remain elevated with the gap between perceptions and actual inflation unusually wide.It says the rising cost of living remains the most pressing concern for consumers. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Oct. 16, 2023.The Canadian Press

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A dayslong attempt by Russian forces to storm a strategically important city in eastern Ukraine appears to be running out of steam, Kyiv officials said Monday, as the Kremlin’s war entered its 600th day.Ukrainian forces repelled 15 Russian attacks from four directions on Avdiivka over the previous 24 hours, the Ukrainian General Staff said. That compared with up to 60 attacks a day in the middle of last week, according to Vitalii Barabash, head of the city administration. The slackening suggests the Russian effort to capture Avdiivka has “deflated,” Barabash said.A Washington-based think tank broadly concurred with that assessment. “Russian forces continued offensive operations aimed at encircling Avdiivka … but have yet to make further gains amid a likely decreasing tempo of Russian operations in the area,” the Institute for the Study of War said in analysis published late Sunday.Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, told a U.N. TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) - Florida is infamous for having some of the craziest events and stories, but one of the strangest things to come from the state might be its slang. While some states around the country have their own variations of strange phrases, like a "tavern" in South Dakota is a sloppy joe, not a bar. In Mississippi, to "carry" doesn't mean having a gun on you; it means driving someone. But this Florida phrase, created in and around the Jacksonville area, seemed to stump respondents on a recent survey that sought to find the "hardest to understand states" by measuring how confused the rest of the country was by the states' phrases. Florida company creates ‘World’s Largest Charcuterie Board,’ shattering Guinness World Record According to a survey conducted by the language learning app Preply, the Sunshine State ranked in the top 20 states with the hardest-to-understand slang with the phrase "jiffy feet."Do you recognize this phrase? If you don't, you're not alone, as 43% o...
