KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There were times this spring when Trevor Larnach was unsure whether he’d be starting the season with the Twins or the Triple-A Saints. If not for a pair of injuries to Jorge Polanco and Alex Kirilloff, it’s very possible the outfielder could have started in St. Paul. But with an opportunity in front of him, Larnach seized it with a stellar spring, and on Thursday, he had his fingerprints all over the Twins’ 2-0 win over the Royals in the season opener.“I think he kind of relishes the opportunities to be out there on Opening Day just to simply be a good big leaguer,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He’s driven to be great, and I think he sees this as an opportunity to go prove that and show everyone what he can do. It doesn’t bother him, I don’t think at all, hitting him in the four hole on Opening Day. He handled it all great and he hit some balls good.”With the game tied in the sixth inning Thursday, Larnach shot a single up the middle to bring home Byron Buxton. He ...Adam Wainwright surprises on Opening Day, sings the national anthem!

ST. LOUIS - Adam Wainwright has spent a lot of Opening Days on the mound (six to be exact). For his final one as a player, he drew an assignment he has never had for a St. Louis Cardinals home opener. Wainwright landed on the injured list last week, so he couldn't pitch in the home opener. Instead, he traded his glove for a microphone. To the surprise of the Busch Stadium crowd, he sang the National Anthem. The Cardinals had planned to honor Wainwright with some sort of gesture before the game as the 41-year-old embarks on his final MLB season. It was initially though there might be a video presentation to honor his accomplishments."A few days ago, when we were still in Jupiter, they told me, when they had planned on starting me, [there would be] a tribute today. They wanted me to pick someone special to me, so I was going to have Gary [Baker] and Greg [Barnhill] sing [the National Anthem] while I warmed up. Those are my buddies. By Rio Yamat | Associated PressLAS VEGAS — The high-stakes gambler who carried out the deadliest mass shooting in modern America, killing 60 and injuring hundreds more in Las Vegas, was apparently angry over how the casinos were treating him despite his high-roller status, according to a fellow gambler whose interview with the FBI is detailed in hundreds of pages of documents made public this week. The gambler, whose name is redacted in the new documents, said he believed the stress could have easily caused gunman Stephen Paddock “to snap.” Paddock, 64, was a video poker player who relied on gambling as his main source of income. The revelation comes years after the FBI in Las Vegas and the local police department concluded their investigations without a definitive motive, although both agencies said Paddock burned through more than $1.5 million, became obsessed with guns, and distanced himself from his girlfriend and family in the months leading up to the massacre. In a st...Two alleged gang members arrested in Oakland party shooting where teenaged brothers were gunned down

OAKLAND — Two alleged members of an Oakland subset of the Norteño gang have been arrested on charges that they shot and killed two Berkeley brothers at a 2022 party, after mistaking the victims for rival gang members.Authorities say both suspects were 17 at the time of the shooting and were booked at juvenile hall. Their names have not yet been released, and detectives are expected to take the case to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office for potential filing early next week.Brothers Jazy Sotelo Garcia, 17, and Angel Sotelo Garcia, 15, were shot and killed around 10 p.m. on Oct. 1, at a party held in an Airbnb rental home on the 900 block of Apgar Street in North Oakland. The party had about 30 attendees, most of whom were Berkeley High students. Two others were injured, but survived.Then-Oakland police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said at the time the case was not gang related, but now authorities are disputing that, saying that the alleged shooters mistook at least ...Springer’s 5 hits help Jays outlast Cards 10-9 in opener

ST. LOUIS (AP) — George Springer had five hits and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in three runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat St. Louis 10-9 on Thursday despite the Cardinals’ Tyler O’Neill tying a major league record by homering on opening day George for the fourth straight season.Making his Cardinals debut, catcher Willson Contreras left after the eighth inning because of an injured knee and was sent for a scan.Springer was 5 for 6 with five singles in the fourth five-hit game of his big league career to go along with a six-game game for Houston at Oakland in May 2018. Springer set a Toronto record for hits in an opener and combined with Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman to become the first pair of players with five hits each on opening day since at least 1901.“It’s awesome, obviously you want to start off good,” Springer said. “It’s only one game. But, I’ll take all the hits I can get.”Bo Bichette had four hits and Matt Chapman three for the Blue Jays, ...Mississippi pushes more state policing in mostly Black city

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The majority-white and Republican-led Mississippi Legislature is taking final steps to expand the the territory of a state-run police department inside the capital city of Jackson, which is majority-Black and governed by Democrats.Critics say the proposal would stomp on local self-governance and create unequal systems of justice in different parts Jackson, which has the highest percentage of Black residents of any major U.S. city.Supporters say they are trying to reduce crime in a city of about 150,000 residents, which had more than 100 homicides for each of the past three years.Senators on Thursday passed the final version of a bill that Democratic Sen. John Horhn of Jackson called “toxic,” with 31 Republicans voting yes and 15 Democrats voting no.The House is expected to pass the bill Friday and send it to Republican Gov. Tate Reeves.
