The family of a 16-year-old girl who had been missing since Jan. 1 and who was recently found safe and reunited with her mother, held a press conference Wednesday to thank the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for their efforts in finding the teen.  Alinka Castaneda, 16, left her family’s home in Carson on New Year’s Day and was seen “entering an unknown vehicle” in the 23000 block of South Carodale Avenue at 5 a.m., officials with the sheriff’s department said.   Footage from a Ring doorbell camera captured an unidentified man walking toward Castaneda moments before she disappeared. While the teen’s family initially believed her disappearance may have been an attempt to run away, they later received several distressing calls from the 16-year-old, which prompted fears that she may have been a victim of sex trafficking. Moses Castillo, a retired LAPD detective and a private investigator who worked on the case, told NewsNation that there was at...

Beau is Afraid Scares up an Overbearing Freudian Nightmare

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:13:50 GMT

A few years back, writer/director Ari Aster broke the horror mold with his films Hereditary and Midsommar, his Polanski-inspired sense of dread and interest in psychological nuance bolstering a genre that was subsisting on paranormal scares and torture porn. He employs those familiar tropes in his latest horror-comedy, Beau is Afraid, but instead of utilizing restraint, which is his strength, he flings us down a wormhole of Freudian anxiety, nightmarish surrealism, and extreme hyperbole.Although Aster’s tireless ambition is on display, his slow-burn style is nowhere to be found in the A24 release. Beau is a long, exhausting pilgrimage through one man’s shortcomings ripped straight out of a Philip Roth novel and filtered through Clive Barker’s imagination. It’s a fairy tale rendering of adult hell.A four-part episodic journey, the movie opens in a birth canal (yep, get ready) where our hero (sort of) Beau Wassermann (Joaquin Phoenix) sees the world for the first time and is immediate...
