WARNING: VIDEO CONTAINS GRAPHIC CONTENTNEWARK — Sevgi Fernandez’s gut turned as the police body camera footage unfolded.Fernandez, founder of the Bay Area police accountability nonprofit Together We Stand, watched as officers confronted 19-year-old Newark resident Elmer Lopez-Castaneda during a traffic stop here on a stolen car this spring. The footage shows officers opening fire on the teenager after police say he “ignored officers’ commands” and grabbed from his waistband what they thought was a firearm, but was actually a replica airsoft pistol.Newark Police said Elmer Lopez Castaneda, 19, reached for this replica, which shoots pellets but resembles a real pistol. (Credit: Newark PD) To Fernandez, the footage, which was released in May by the Fremont Police Department, does not clearly show whether Lopez-Castaneda grabbed the airsoft gun.“What is clear is it was not aimed at anybody at the time they riddled him with bullets,” Fernandez said, noti...

49ers mailbag: What are fans hyped to see in season opener in Pittsburgh?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:17:22 GMT

Nine weeks shy of the 49ers’ season opener, it’s a numerically appropriate time to awaken the Faithful. So, by the expanding reach of social media, here are who and what they’re hyped to see Sept. 10 at the Pittsburgh Steelers:Can’t wait to go to this game! I’m just excited to see 49ers football back in action. Hopefully they don’t drop this opener like they did last year in Chicago. (@calebpisowicz)A sober reminder that the 49ers lost that rainy opener 19-10 to a Bears team that next lost 14 of 16 games. More bleak history: the 49ers also dropped openers in 2017, ’18 and ’20 under coach Kyle Shanahan.BOOOOOOOSSSSSSAAAAAA!!! (@droops510)Two weeks until the 49ers’ veterans report for training camp (July 25), and that includes Nick Bosa, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year. So, two weeks until the pseudo-deadline for the 49ers to award Bosa an extension over $30 million annually, perhaps as the NFL’s highest-paid non-quarterback. If no deal is reached when camp opens, don’t ...

War over new California rooftop solar rules rages on

A conspiracy between big government and big utilities to protect big corporate profits? No, no, the regulator said.A violation of law requiring rooftop solar to keep growing rapidly in California? That isn’t the law at all, the regulator said.Government spewing a lie that financial breaks given to (wealthier) rooftop solar owners shift burdens to their (less-well-off) neighbors — to the tune of billions of dollars? That’s just wrong, the regulator said, and asserting the cost shift doesn’t exist is “a false statement and a factual misinterpretation.”Rancho Mission Viejo  (Photo by Jeff Gritchen, Orange County Register/SCNG) And so the California Public Utilities Commission has rejected requests for a do-over of its wildly controversial new rooftop solar rules, which went into effect in April. They gave everyone something to hate. But alas, the solar wars rage on: Opponents continue their battle in court, armed, for better or worse, with the same arguments that failed to convinc...
